Theory Lessons

The study of music theory can be divided into three areas:

• Harmony: how chords are constructed and work;

• Counterpoint: how notes relate to one another; and

• Musical form: how pieces are constructed and understood. 

Studies in each of these three areas helps the musician to understand the language of the composers and greatly facilitates the students' musical communication skills. 

Knowledge of music theory gives musicians of any level greater tools with which to express their ideas.  It also aids the student to see and understand the patterns of the notes—to see how the notes work together to make musical sense.  This can greatly speed up and deepen the experience of learning the music and taking it off of the page and turning it into a natural musical expression of the student. 
 

For the pianist who may be considering further study in college, music theory is essential to those studies, and will give the developing musician the tools and vocabulary to understand the language of the great masters.  From the first lesson, students are shown how all the notes sensibly fit together, permitting the natural analysis of even complex music.
